Mediated
Screen Learning – a new dynamic approach to video
work
Maggie Brown wrote in 'The Guardian'
'Television is an impressionistic, suggestive medium. Research about
television and learning shows that learning goes on in a learning
environment, where dialogue is taking place
with teachers or parents.
It needs to be
mediated. There is nothing wrong with harnessing new
technology to teach our children but there is still a big
role for formal education.'
We humbly believe that we have something to contribute to 'screen
learning'.
Unlike other e-Books, which only focus on checking comprehension skills, this
mediated work facilitates the
students’ learning process, while it raises their
overall listening
skills.
Ready-made exercises for classroom
use
English-behind-the-scenes is time-saving, engaging
and fresh. Each video pack includes student’s worksheets, teacher’s notes and
table of contents. As teachers we have already used all the material we offer here. It is up
to you to choose the most appropriate videos for each group, depending on your
students’ level, ages, interests, tastes, their different needs and realities.
For teachers preparing students for any of the UCLES examinations, there is
plenty of material for further practice in the skills required for the different
examinations. For those who are not, the material is equally challenging.
Authentic material at all
levels
This authentic material provides the perfect
opportunity for students to identify with the situation and characters, and
thereby analyse not only the choice of vocabulary and grammatical form, but also
the discourse, the variety of accents and the phonological and cultural aspects
of the language.
There is material to cater for the needs of higher and lower
levels alike, but there is also material which has been adapted for use at
different levels. The difference lies in the depth of the work, the range of
structures to be introduced, practised or recycled, the choice of lexical items,
the topics dealt with, cultural references, and so on.
Active
learning in a powerful context ensures
memorability
This is not
just sit back, relax and enjoy. Although we are sure you will,
you will also be actively involved
with your students in each context. This approach is based on exploiting the context as much as possible, getting
students to zero in on the language used, be it grammatical patterns, lexical
items, discourse linkers, or register. This provides them with the tools they
need to bring about true communication. Films probably provide the most powerful
context for a natural approach to language learning. Why not start using this
material on a daily basis, alongside your regular
text-book?
